Hello everyone! Things have been quite hectic during the last couple of months and I’ve not been able to blog as much as I would have liked to. On the positive side, I recently read my first manga! Picking up some manga from the library has helped me beat a reading slump and I’m getting a kick out of Japanese graphic novels. So without further ado, here is my June and July wrap up.
Books Read
BL Metamorphosis, Vol. 1 by Kaori Tsurutani ⭐⭐⭐⭐

BL Metamorphosis is such a sweet and wholesome story. It follows Ichinoi, a 75-year-old calligraphy teacher who buys a Boy’s Love manga on a whim. She becomes intrigued with the world of manga and develops a friendship with Urara, a teenage BL fan who works at the bookstore. I borrowed a copy from the library and am a little sad because they don’t have the next volumes in the series. Hopefully, I can find volume 2 soon!
Tokyo Tarareba Girls, Vol. 1 by Akiko Higashimura ⭐⭐⭐

Tokyo Tarareba Girls centres around Rinko, a screenwriter who can’t catch a break in her love life at the age of 33. I really enjoyed the female friendship between Rinko and her best friends. Part of the reason why I rated it 3 stars is because they all lament the fact that they are still single. In her afterword, the author acknowledges that she doesn’t believe women have to get married. While I understand that this manga is tongue-in-cheek, I’m not really sure about the message it sends out. This is a fun read though and I’m hoping for more character growth as the series progresses.
On a side note, after reading the first volume I discovered that it was adapted into a TV show. I’ve watched some of this online with subtitles and it looks interesting!
