Wrap Up: December 2020

Hello everyone and happy new year! I really hope this year will be better for all of us than 2020. December was a great reading month as I reached my Goodreads Challenge target of 30 books. I usually set this at 15 books and decided to increase the number to 30 which is a huge leap! It was my best reading year to date and I’m happy with the achievement! My newfound love of graphic novels and audiobooks definitely helped me to achieve reading zen during a hectic time.

No One Is Too Small to Make A Difference by Greta Thunberg ⭐⭐⭐

This is a collection of speeches and does get quite repetitive at times. The message of climate change is important although I felt that Greta didn’t really offer any solutions.

Selected Poems of Sylvia Plath by Sylvia Plath ⭐⭐⭐

A selection of Sylvia Plath’s poetry chosen by Ted Hughes. Many of the poems went over my head so I had to google what they meant. Her poetry is intensely personal and haunting. Having also read The Bell Jar, I am more of a fan of Plath’s prose, but I did enjoy her use of imagery.

True Grit by Charles Portis ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I listened to the audiobook of True Grit which is wonderfully narrated by Donna Tartt. This is a brilliant Western about a 14-year-old girl called Mattie Ross who decides to avenge the murder of her father by enlisting the help of U.S. Marshal, Rooster Cogburn. It’s an adventure-packed story with memorable characters and a bittersweet ending. I’m looking forward to watching the film adaptation.
